Description
Obsidian is the only vineyard owned by Donelan Family Wines and one of the most distinctive sites they cultivate. Perched steeply above the Franz Valley floor in Knights Valley, the vineyard is remarkably dry, even during periods of heavy rainfall. The vines struggle to produce both canopy and fruit, resulting in tiny berries, exceptionally low yields and remarkable concentration. The wines are equally distinctive, with aromas of chocolate ganache, blackcurrant, fig and graphite leading into an expansive, full-bodied palate. The mid-palate brings layers of roasted coffee bean, sarsaparilla and dark chocolate, with the vineyard’s characteristic minerality and structure providing balance and definition. The finish simply keeps going, long after most wines have faded.
The vineyard was sadly devastated by the wildfires of 2017, but the Donelan family have replanted and remain committed to bringing Obsidian back when the new vines produce fruit worthy of the site. Until then, the remaining bottles will only become rarer and more coveted.
